Ring Holder
This is a one-part design challenge where we need to create a useful artifact that fits into a 75 square millimeter cube for 3D printing.
Just Rhino, no sketch.
My first design, for which I made a sketch, was a cup holder rather than a ring holder. I quickly found out that the dimension limits were way too small for a regular coffee shop cup. Therefore, I opted for a ring holder, which I thought was useful and fashionable. I directly started modeling in Rhino without making a sketch.
I took my inspiration from Monument Valley and designed a crown-shaped geometry. Shapes in Monument Valley are all presented in their original forms—you don’t see rounded edges, only extrusions. The style was simple and sleek, which I liked. To add a fashion accessory touch, I tweaked the design by placing my name on top of the crown in a classic birthday cake font. This not only added a sense of style but was also more sensible for 3D printing than having it flow around the side of the crown.
The crown printed out.
I was quite happy with the final result. Although my name wasn't printed due to the poor quality of the 3D printer, it wasn't noticeable given all the shiny jewelry on top.
